Purchase a .in Domain Name

For a business selling to Indian customers, a government-facing service, a regional brand, or a founder who wants the country-code extension as the primary identity, the .in carries a meaning that a generic .com cannot replicate.

It also carries obligations. Since 2026, NIXI (the National Internet Exchange of India, which manages the .in registry) requires every registrant to complete mandatory Know Your Customer verification. Identity documents must be verifiable. Foreign registrants must declare a connection to India.

The KYC Requirement

The National Internet Exchange of India requires mandatory identity verification for all .in and .bharat domain registrants.

NIXI's Know Your Registrant policy was introduced to curb cybercrime and phishing, enhance accountability and align with Indian regulatory expectations under MeitY and CERT-In guidance.

Without completing KYC, a .in domain may be suspended or deleted after the registrar's deadline. This is not optional paperwork. A domain that fails verification stops resolving.

How to complete .in domain KYC

Registering a .in Domain Name in India

  1. Search the name

Use the SowfiHost domain search. If the .in domain is taken, the search will show .co.in, .net.in, .org.in, or alternative names.

  2. Choose your term

A .in can be registered for between one and ten years. Start with one year if you are testing a brand.

  3. Complete checkout in INR

SowfiHost bills in rupees. Enter your GSTIN if you need a tax invoice for business accounting.

  4. Complete KYC immediately

Do not wait for the deadline. Log into the panel, choose DigiLocker or manual upload and submit your identity proof. A domain without verified KYC is a domain at risk of suspension.

  5. Verify the registrant email

Click the verification link sent by the registry. This is separate from KYC and both are required.

  6. Configure DNS or nameservers

If you host with SowfiHost, nameservers are set automatically. If you host elsewhere, change the nameservers or create A, CNAME, MX and TXT records in the DNS zone editor.

  7. Confirm the domain resolves

DNS propagation takes minutes to 48 hours depending on TTL.

Expiry, Grace Period and Restoration

A .in domain that expires does not vanish immediately, but the window to recover it at a normal price is shorter than most people assume.

  1. Day 1 to 30

    Grace period

A .in domain can be renewed at the normal price up to day 30 after expiry. During this time, the domain has already stopped resolving (your website is offline and email to the domain stops arriving) but a standard renewal restores it without a penalty.

  2. From day 31

    Redemption period

The domain can only be restored, not renewed. Restoration at a typical Indian registrar costs ₹6,000 to ₹13,000, excluding GST and the renewal.

  3. After redemption

    Deleted

After the redemption window closes, the registry deletes the domain and anyone can register it.

What this means in practice

  • Keep your registrant email current. KYC notices and expiry reminders go there.
  • Do not rely on a single reminder. Add the expiry date to your calendar and your client onboarding document.
  • If you manage domains for clients, maintain a register with expiry dates and KYC status. A lapsed .in is harder and more expensive to recover than a lapsed .com.
  • Complete KYC before the deadline. A suspended domain for failed KYC follows the same recovery path as an expired one and the restoration fee is the same.

Transferring an Existing .in to SowfiHost

If you already own a .in domain and want to consolidate it with your hosting, the process follows NIXI rules.

Eligibility

The domain must be at least 60 days old since registration or last transfer. It must be active, not expired and not in redemption. You need the auth/EPP code from your current registrar and the domain must be unlocked.

The process

Obtain the auth code from your current registrar, enter it on the SowfiHost transfer page, pay the transfer fee of ₹899 and the transfer is initiated. One year is added to your existing expiry date. Your current registrar may send a confirmation email that you must approve.

KYC during transfer

A .in domain may require identity verification (eKYC) through DigiLocker in the client area. If your current registrar already verified you, NIXI may still require confirmation on the gaining registrar's platform.

What transfers over

The domain name, its creation date and its remaining registration term plus the added year. DNS records are typically preserved if you keep the same nameservers, but if you move to SowfiHost's nameservers, you will need to recreate A, MX and TXT records.

When a transfer is not possible: if the domain is in redemption or pending deletion, it cannot be transferred. Restore it at the current registrar first, then transfer.

Who Should Buy a .in Domain?

A .in domain is the right choice if you are

  • An Indian business that wants the country-code extension as a trust signal for local customers
  • A founder building for the Indian market first, where .in reads as native and intentional
  • A government-facing or compliance-sensitive service where an Indian domain identity matters
  • A brand that wants to defensively hold the .in alongside the .com
  • A registrant who is comfortable completing KYC and does not need a privacy service

Another extension may be better if you need

No KYC
A .com requires no identity documents from Indian buyers. A .in does.
Global brand neutrality
A .com does not signal a single country. A .in does.
A faster, simpler purchase
A .in adds a verification step after checkout that a .com does not.

There is no wrong answer here, only a mismatch between the extension and the registrant's requirements. Tell our pre-sales team what you are building and where your customers are and we will tell you which extension fits, including if the answer is that you need both.
