Python & Django Hosting

A Flask API, a Django application and a FastAPI service all need a Python runtime, a virtual environment and a WSGI or ASGI entry point.

On a VPS you would install Gunicorn or Uvicorn, configure Nginx as a reverse proxy, write a systemd unit and manage the deployment yourself.

On managed cloud hosting, the web server handles that layer for you through a module called Phusion Passenger, which loads your application from apassenger_wsgi.py file that exposes a callable named application. cPanel's Python Selector creates that file and the virtual environment for you.

Python and Django hosting on SowfiHost

SowfiHost runs Python and Django hosting on this managed model, on Indian data centers, with per-site virtual environments, selectable Python versions, SSH access and a published resource allocation. It is the right home for a Python application that needs a managed runtime without VPS administration.

It is not the right home for an application that needs root access, custom system daemons or horizontally scaled workers, and this page says so before you buy.

Python Versions and the Virtual Environment Model

SowfiHost supports selectable Python versions through cPanel's Python Selector, from Python 2.7 through the current stable release.

Per-site virtual environments

cPanel's Python Selector creates an isolated virtual environment for each application, sopip install runs inside that environment and does not affect other Python applications on the same account or server. This is the Python equivalent of container isolation at the dependency level: two applications can require different versions of the same package without conflict.

How you manage dependencies

You activate the virtual environment over SSH or use the panel's terminal and runpip install -r requirements.txt. The requirements.txt file is the source of truth for your deployment.

Packages that need compilation (psycopg2, Pillow, cryptography, mysqlclient) may require system libraries that cloud hosting does not provide. Tell us which packages your application needs before you buy and we will confirm whether they install cleanly on the plan you are considering.

WSGI, not ASGI, on the managed model

cPanel's Python integration is built around WSGI through Passenger. Django handles WSGI internally and generates its own WSGI file inside the project folder. Flask and Pyramid expose a WSGI callable.

FastAPI and other ASGI frameworks need an ASGI server such as Uvicorn, which the managed Passenger model does not run. If your application is ASGI-native and depends on async endpoints, a VPS is the correct product and we will tell you so rather than selling you a cloud hosting plan that fails.

How Django Deployment Works on SowfiHost

Django deployment on managed cloud hosting follows a fixed sequence. Understanding it before you sign up prevents the most common support tickets.

Django deployment on SowfiHost
  1. Create the Python application

In cPanel, open Setup Python App, choose the Python version, set the application root and the application URL and click Create. cPanel builds the virtual environment and generates passenger_wsgi.py.

  2. Point passenger_wsgi.py at your Django project

The generated file exposes the application and you edit it to import your Django WSGI application from your project's wsgi.py. This is the single most common source of 500 errors: a path or import that does not resolve.

  3. Install dependencies

Activate the virtual environment and run pip install -r requirements.txt. Django itself, your database driver and any packages your app imports.

  4. Configure settings

Set ALLOWED_HOSTS, DEBUG = False, database credentials, static file paths and SECRET_KEY from environment variables or a settings file outside version control. Django's production deployment checklist covers these and should be worked through before go-live.

  5. Run database migrations

python manage.py migrate against the database you have created in cPanel.

  6. Collect static files

python manage.py collectstatic and configure the panel to serve them. On Passenger, static file serving is handled by the web server, not by Django and DEBUG = False means Django will not serve them itself.

  7. Restart the application

Python Selector has a restart control. Changes to code or environment variables require a restart to take effect.

What we do not do is debug your Django code. If a view raises an exception because of a logic error, that is application work, not hosting work.

Databases for Python Applications

Django and most Python frameworks support MySQL, SQLite and MariaDB. On SowfiHost, MariaDB is available alongside MySQL and you can run different database engines on different sites under the same account.

MySQL and MariaDB

Use MySQL for anything a customer touches.

SQLite is not for production

It works for development and small internal tools, but concurrent writes lock the database file and a cloud hosting account is exactly the environment where concurrent access happens.

Connection limits apply

Each plan publishes a concurrent database connection limit. A Django application withCONN_MAX_AGE set and a connection pool can exhaust that limit under load. If you seetoo many connections errors, the fix is tuning CONN_MAX_AGE, reducing worker processes or upgrading to a plan with a higher connection ceiling. We will help you identify which of those applies.

SSH, pip and Package Compilation

SSH access is available and is required for most Python workflows: activating the virtual environment, running pip, running manage.py commands and reading logs.

What you can do over SSH

  • Activate the virtual environment and install packages with pip
  • Run Django management commands: migrate, collectstatic, createsuperuser, shell
  • Inspect application logs, including Passenger's log output
  • Restart the application
  • Run python --version and confirm the selected runtime

What you cannot do

  • Install system-level packages with apt or yum
  • Run Docker
  • Configure a systemd service
  • Bind to privileged ports

Those require root and root is what a VPS provides.

Packages that need compilation. psycopg2 needs libpq-dev,mysqlclient needs libmysqlclient-dev, Pillow needs image libraries. On cloud hosting these system libraries may or may not be present.

The binary wheels published on PyPI cover most common platforms, so pip install psycopg2-binaryusually works where psycopg2 does not. Tell us your dependency list before you buy and we will confirm it is installed.

Resource Limits and What Happens When Your App Spikes

Python applications are subject to the same container resource limits as any other workload on the plan: CPU, RAM, entry processes, I/O and inode count. A Django application that opens many database connections, spawns threads or runs heavy background queries will hit those limits sooner than a static site.

On a traffic spike, the specific resource is throttled. Your application stays up and may slow briefly. We do not suspend applications for traffic growth.

Python processes hold memory

4 workers×150 MB each≈600 MB

That is before the database connection overhead is counted. Check the RAM allocation on the plan against your application's actual resident memory before you deploy. We will help you measure it; we will not guess for you.

On sustained overage, we identify the process consuming the resource and you have three options:

1

Optimise the application

We will help identify whether the cause is a database query, a memory leak or a runaway worker.

2

Upgrade the plan

Prorated, with no penalty.

3

Move to a VPS

When the workload has outgrown a cloud hosting container, a VPS gives it dedicated resources.

Background tasks: the managed model runs your application in the web request path. Long-running jobs (Celery workers, scheduled data imports, report generation) need a process supervisor and persistent background execution, which cloud hosting does not provide. Use cron for scheduled jobs and use a VPS or a managed task queue for persistent workers.

Security, SSL and Backups

Free SSL

Free SSL on every domain, auto-provisioned and auto-renewed. HTTPS is terminated at the web server before the request reaches your Python application, so your application does not need to handle TLS itself.

Platform protection

Firewall, DDoS mitigation and malware scanning are included on the platform. Python applications are not immune to malicious input: validate and sanitise at the application layer, keep Django and your dependencies updated and do not run with DEBUG = True in production.

Environment variables and secrets

Store SECRET_KEY, database passwords and API keys in environment variables or a settings file outside your public document root. Do not commit them to your repository and do not place them in a directory the web server serves.

Daily offsite backups

Backups are taken daily and stored offsite in a separate Indian data center. Retention is 30 days on all plans. Python applications are included in the website backup and are restored with the site, but the virtual environment and application process may need to be restarted or redeployed after a restore. Plan for that step in your recovery runbook.

Migrating a Python or Django Application to SowfiHost

Moving a Python application is different from moving a PHP site. The files and database are the easy part; the virtual environment, the WSGI entry point and the environment variables are where migrations fail.

Migrating a Python or Django application
1

What you need to provide

Your application source, requirements.txt, the database dump, your environment variables and secrets and the Python version your application targets. If you are on a VPS with SSH, we can pull the application directory and database directly.

2

What we do

Stage the application, create the virtual environment with the selected Python version, install dependencies, configure passenger_wsgi.py or the equivalent entry point, set environment variables, create and import the database, run migrations, collect static files, configure SSL and test that the application responds on a temporary URL before cutover.

3

What you must verify

That file paths are relative to the application root rather than hard-coded to the old server, that database connection strings point at the new database, that ALLOWED_HOSTS includes the new domain, that any cron jobs are recreated and that no code depends on a system package or service the cloud hosting environment does not provide.

First-time inbound migrations from another hosting provider are free, as with any other site type. Migration of additional applications later, plan or account transfers and ownership changes are priced openly and quoted before work begins. See our migration policy.

Application-level refactoring (converting a hard-coded path, replacing an unsupported package or adapting an ASGI app to WSGI) is development work, not migration work and we will tell you clearly which side of that line a task falls on.

Who Python Hosting on SowfiHost Suits

A good fit if you are

  • Deploying a Flask or Django application that needs a managed Python runtime without VPS administration
  • Running a small-to-medium Django project (a SaaS MVP, an internal tool, a content-backed web app) where the traffic profile fits a cloud hosting container
  • Hosting a Python application alongside a WordPress or static site on the same account
  • A developer who wants a per-site virtual environment, pip, SSH and a WSGI entry point without writing a systemd unit
  • Migrating off a PaaS whose per-seat or per-dyno pricing has outgrown a modest application
  • An agency hosting a client's Django application alongside their marketing site

Not the right fit if you need

  • Root access, Docker, custom system daemons or apt package installation; that is a VPS or dedicated server
  • ASGI-native frameworks served by Uvicorn or Hypercorn; the managed Passenger model is WSGI
  • Persistent background workers such as Celery, RQ or a long-running queue consumer; use cron for scheduled jobs and a VPS for persistent workers
  • Horizontally scaled application servers behind a load balancer
  • Application-level debugging and code support from the hosting provider; that is a development retainer, not hosting
  • Windows, IIS or .NET runtime environments

If you are unsure which side of that line you fall on, describe your framework, your dependency list, your expected traffic and your database requirements to our team. We will tell you whether a cloud hosting Python container is the right home for it, including telling you to buy a VPS if that is the honest answer.
